(Harvard Business Review, 2019)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The truth is, ideas are only as good as the people who execute them &#8211; a mantra I learned first-hand from Emmy Nominated Creative Director (and mentor)\u00a0Ron Gibori.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Having an idea, no matter how smart or unique or interesting, isn\u2019t enough. The difference between&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.inc.com\/nicolas-cole\/10-lies-people-believe-about-success-that-simply-arent-true.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">success<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.inc.com\/nicolas-cole\/failure-doesnt-actually-exist-heres-why.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">failure<\/a>&nbsp;has very little to do with the actual idea, and far more to do with the people who bring that idea to life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"032f\">Execution is everything.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Entrepreneurship, then, tends to be a question of habits. Failure isn\u2019t so much a gamble you\u2019re taking on your idea, but rather the result of the way you choose to execute. Nobody sits down and comes up with a perfect idea. Nobody starts at square one with a flawless concept. In the end, success is what comes after an endless stream of pivots, adjustments,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.inc.com\/nicolas-cole\/8-horrible-habits-that-are-ruining-your-productivity-and-what-you-can-do-to-fix-.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">good habits<\/a>, and collaborative efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, why do so many entrepreneurs fail? It\u2019s not because of their ideas (although, come on, sometimes an idea just doesn\u2019t have legs).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No, they fail because:<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"b3f0\">1. They don\u2019t know what true hard work actually looks like.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gary Vaynerchuk has said in multiple interviews that he lacks belief in entrepreneurs that come from privileged backgrounds, or graduated from an ivy league school and now want to play the game of starting a business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And do you know what? As a kid who grew up extremely privileged, I actually agree with him. Having been raised in that sort of environment, there\u2019s a lot to be thankful for. There\u2019s also a lot you miss out on \u2014 the feeling of having to fight for what you want out of life being one of them. That was something I had to teach myself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Entrepreneurship isn\u2019t like school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It doesn\u2019t give you clearly defined assignments, and it doesn\u2019t give you tangible measures for success. Those are things you have to give yourself. Most entrepreneurs lose because of this reason and this reason only: they can\u2019t define their own measures of success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And not only do they struggle to define those measures, but they are shocked by the amount of effort it actually takes to achieve them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"b237\">2. They don\u2019t know how to be \u201cpatiently impatient.\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I came up with this phrase recently, and it sums up so perfectly this concept of balancing ambition with patience, hunger with contentment. Too often, people think it\u2019s one or the other: you\u2019re either grinding your face off, or you\u2019re slacking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You\u2019re awake or you\u2019re asleep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s just not true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The balancing point is to be \u201cpatiently impatient.\u201d You have to be aware that great things take time, and to be willing to walk that long road, while at the same time be impatient enough to never accept the status quo. You have to be able to celebrate the wins, yet always be pushing yourself toward the next one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"3bf2\">3. They try to chase what\u2019s popular, instead of what they\u2019re good at.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It astounds me how many people I see trying to start social media apps with absolutely no background or true in-the-trenches knowledge of social media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That logic is no different than someone deciding to open a taco restaurant simply because they love tacos. The truth is, they don\u2019t know a thing about running a profitable restaurant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As an entrepreneur, your question should never be, \u201cWhat do people want?\u201d Your question should be, \u201cWhat do I know better than anyone else, and&nbsp;<em>what is my market missing that people would want?<\/em>\u201d True knowledge of your craft will always go farther than someone who hops into an industry for the popularity factor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Don\u2019t chase trends. Instead, invest heavily in yourself and the things you are the best at.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"dbc0\">4. They go at it alone.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another lesson learned from my mentor, entrepreneurship is not a solo sport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And the ones that struggle the most tend to be the most hesitant to share with others \u2014 whether that\u2019s the workload, or equity, or even their network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nothing great is built by yourself. Even if you maintain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.remindax.com\/blog\/5-mistakes-startup-owners-make\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">complete ownership<\/a> over whatever it is you\u2019re building, you are still going to need other people. You\u2019re going to need someone to design what you\u2019re building, or develop it, or source it, or manufacture it.&nbsp;And to treat others as commodities instead of valuable partners is to set yourself up for failure before you\u2019ve even begun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"a426\">5. They don\u2019t know what they don\u2019t know.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The number one cause of failed entrepreneurs has to be this \u2014 not knowing what you don\u2019t know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Especially if you\u2019re strolling up into a new industry, this part of the equation isn\u2019t just crucial; it\u2019s a matter of life and death. You cannot approach building your business with the mentality that you\u2019ve got it all figured out, because you don\u2019t. Even if you have years upon years of industry experience, the moment you think you\u2019ve got all the answers is the moment you stop listening. And when you stop listening, you stop learning, your awareness gets clouded, and you start making decisions based on assumptions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Always be on the lookout for what you don\u2019t know, yet. And the moment you find something, do not take the posture that you are above it. Take a seat. Humble yourself. You\u2019ll grow and learn faster that way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"3510\">6. They don\u2019t stay their lane.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Where do people go off-course? The moment they try to do what isn\u2019t their primary skill set, simply because they can.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example: the Founder with no creative background who suddenly wants to give creative input.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Staying your lane is a skill in itself. It means being willing to step aside and let someone more knowledgable or experienced drive the car, so that you can maintain your own responsibilities in a different domain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As soon as an entrepreneur tries to wear every single hat, they\u2019ve started down a treacherous path.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"0647\">7. They can\u2019t handle the responsibility.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It has practically become a fashion statement to have your social media profile read, \u201cCEO\u201d or \u201cFounder\u201d of something that hasn\u2019t even started generating revenue yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That proves how many people want the title and are in love with the idea of being this forward-thinking \u201centrepreneur\u201d more than they actually want to be that person in the flesh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because honestly, being an entrepreneur is a lot less about being recognized as one, and a lot more about bearing the responsibility of serving others. If you have people working for you, they are relying on you to take care of them. It\u2019s you who has to put food on the table. It\u2019s you who has to make sure everyone is happy, fulfilled even. It\u2019s you who has to wake up every single day and direct the ship, regardless of how you\u2019re feeling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I will be the first to admit that just about every point on this list is a lesson I learned by watching Ron Gibori, an accomplished serial entrepreneur himself, day in and day out.
